#4 | Blue KC Coaches with Character
Donnell Fletcher, William Chrisman asst. football coach
Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City (Blue KC) and Dayton Moore’s C You in the Major Leagues (CYITML) Foundation have announced William Chrisman High School assistant football coach Donnell Fletcher as the Blue KC Coaches with Character honoree for the month of July. His ability to connect with student-athletes and enhance their skills, both athletically and educationally, have helped make him a key contributor in bettering the lives of the next generation.
Fletcher coached football at Lincoln Prep for 10 years before transitioning and joining the staff at William Chrisman. His coaching background has also included stints as a basketball and track coach. He continues to find unique ways to grow the game of football while helping his players realize there’s more to life than sports.
“One of my most proud moments is watching my student-athletes sign their letters of intent to go to college,” said Fletcher.
Being with his players every day throughout the season whether it’s in the weight room, on the practice field or under the lights on Friday nights in the fall, Fletcher enjoys soaking in the memories of seeing their growth and excitement about playing the game they love.
“I was once given some advice,” said Fletcher. “Always make it about the kids. Once it becomes about you, you are no good to them anymore.”
It’s a message Fletcher continually reminds himself about. He’s able to keep himself grounded and never take anything for granted. He tells his players and other student-athletes to not be afraid of being great. His dedication and perseverance that’s displayed on a daily basis helps his students buy into the messages he shares and helps build a stronger, more cohesive football program.
“I think it’s important to instill standards because it sets the tone for everything in life,” said Fletcher. “The standards you set for yourself help guide your goals.”
Fletcher was born and raised in Kansas City, Missouri and is honored to be selected as a Blue KC Coaches with Character recipient after his initial season at William Chrisman.
“The reason I coach is because of the values and traits I was given through sports,” said Fletcher. “It is up to me to pass it along to someone else. Being recognized for this ability is an awesome feeling.”
“Coaching is a gift and an opportunity,” said Royals President of Baseball Operations and “C” You in the Major Leagues Founder Dayton Moore. “Coach Fletcher’s passion for the game and commitment to those he coaches exemplify the type of man he is. Being able to give back, especially to the next generation, is a humbling honor, and we know everyone that has and will cross paths with Coach Fletcher will feel his dedication to the game he loves. Congratulations and continue to make us proud!”
“Donnell has put his heart and soul into our local youth,” said Fletcher’s nominator Doug Elstun. “He has gone the extra mile and shown the underserved youth an example and even stepped in as a father figure. The Chrisman program has a positive future with Donnell’s involvement and influence.”
“As indicated from Coach Fletcher’s nominator, his immediate impact at William Chrisman has not gone unnoticed,” said Jenny Housley, Blue KC Senior Vice President and Chief Revenue Officer. “Seeing a coach make such a remarkable influence in a short amount of time speaks volumes to his ability to quickly attach himself and bond with those already embedded within the program. We’re excited to add to Coach Fletcher’s growing list of accomplishments by recognizing him as a monthly award winner.”
